Is laser tattoo removal safe?
YES! Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser technology provides the best, evidence-based method for laser tattoo removal. It is STILL the safest, most efficient way to remove or fade all body ink, including body tattoos, radiation markers or permanent make-up.
What’s more, in the right hands, its skin rejuvenation capabilities can be used for pigmentation control, rosacea, birthmarks, even fungal nail infection. Anti-ageing facial treatments such as the Hollywood Peel will result in a smooth, clear, even complexion with fewer fine lines, sun damage and open pores. Does it hurt?
We use ice blocks to help numb the skin. Obviously certain parts of the body are more sensitive than others such as close to bone or inside wrist but ultimately the majority of pain is psychological! If you haven’t detached completely from the ownership of the tattoo you want removed it will hurt more than if you have. There is brain training you can do beforehand and during to better manage pain.
- Put pain in context, think of it as temporary, it will pass.
- You’re in control of your response to it.
- Its not here to harm you, its here to help you.
- Relax & breathe, you’re not in any danger, you don’t need to do anything.
- Don’t be afraid of pain, don’t let it stop you from achieving your objective.
- Focus on the end result, focus on your goal.
Give it go, it really works!
And if all else fails, there’s always numbing cream! Available for purchase from the studio at $15 per tube.
Numbing Cream Application Instructions: If required, apply a thick layer of 5% lidocaine numbing cream to the ink, minimum of 1.5 hours prior to your appointment. IMPORTANT: cover the cream tightly with clingwrap to prevent it moving from the ink and from drying out.
Will it leave a scar?
The Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser technology is much safer than older laser technology; the light from the laser stays on the skin for very tiny fragments of time and this reduces any risk of scarring from the treatment itself. However if you pick or scratch at the healing site you can create scarring. Picking 1 scab before it’s completely healed underneath will result in a scar on your skin. Scar tissue is shiny and always obvious to the trained eye. Healing skin often gets itchy and the temptation to scratch is huge but whatever you do, DON’T PICK OR SCRATCH AT YOUR TATTOO, it will scar if you do.
To avoid scratching wear cotton gloves to bed, apply lots of moisturiser, cover the area, keep the area as cool as possible, antihistamines can help some people if they suspect an allergic reaction to the ink released. Check with your laser specialist.
How long will it take?
The treatment itself doesn’t take very long. The fading process depends on many things like the quality and colours of the ink, whether you want to fade for new or remove completely, the age and where it is on your body among others. In general to achieve clean skin it can take 4-12 sessions, sometimes more, spread out over the course of 18 months-2 years or more.
Usually it takes 4-6 treatments at 6-8 weeks apart to clear the bulk of the ink. Then we lengthen the gap between treatments to allow the body’ immune system more time to process the ink.
Can I just have part of my Tattoo removed?
Yes, the Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser is very accurate. It can correct an uneven line or remove a misspelt word.
What can I expect during and after treatment?
It’s very common for the tattoo and surrounding area to look a bit red and feel slightly raised for a day or so. Pin prick bleeding is quite common, especially on colours. The next day you’ll probably get small blisters form, they could be flat or slightly raised, this is perfectly normal and is a good sign that the treatment is working. Another indication you are responding well to treatment is when the area feels itchy … its your immune system once again doing its job.
We use antiseptic cream and dressing straight after treatment and recommend you leave it on as long as you can, and change the dressing at least once if needed. Its really important that you do not pick at the area, no matter how tempting! And always use sunblock on the area no matter what time of year it is.
You’ll receive written Aftercare Instructions and be asked to send a photo of your healing tattoo 24 hours after treatment.
How does it work?
The laser treatment works by shattering the tattoo ink into tiny particles that your immune system then removes through your lymphatic system.
How effective is treatment?
There are factors that can determine the effectiveness of laser tattoo removal such as:
Research has found that smoking can significantly reduce the chances of successful laser tattoo removal! Another great reason to give it up!
Your immune system is what does all the work in removing the ink from your system after the laser treatment. So being fit and healthy has a huge impact on how efficiently your tattoo disappears.
Black is the easiest colour to remove. Other colours can be more stubborn, we have to see how you respond once treatment is under-way.
Age of tattoo
In general, an older tattoo will take less sessions to remove than a new tattoo.
Considerations prior to treatment
If you suffer from any chronic long term illness such as MS or Inflammatory conditions, are taking any prescribed medications, are pregnant or breast feeding, we may require you to obtain written medical consent from your doctor before commencing treatment. Please get in touch to discuss if you are unsure. Generally the rule is ‘If in doubt, get medical consent!’ You will want to know from your trusted healthcare professional that laser tattoo removal treatment is safe and in no way contra-indicated for you personally as much as we do!
Sun exposure should be avoided before and after treatments.
